Minister of Agriculture Engages with UNDP on Strategic Interventions in Agriculture and Fisheries Sectors

In a meeting held in Aden, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Fisheries Salem al-Soqatri engaged with Zeina Ali, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Yemen, to discuss ongoing projects in the agricultural and fisheries sectors. This dialogue highlights the collaborative efforts between the Yemeni government and the UNDP to enhance these vital sectors.

The discussions focused on the progress of various initiatives within the fisheries sector. Key projects include the rehabilitation of the fishing port in Aden, the establishment of a fish export center in Hadramout, and the development of unloading centers across several governorates. These efforts aim to bolster the local fishing industry and improve economic conditions for those reliant on this sector.

In addition to fisheries, the talks also addressed significant agricultural projects. Noteworthy among these is the “Integrated Water Resources Management and Food Security” initiative, which is being implemented in the governorates of Taiz and Lahij. This project aims to enhance water management practices and ensure food security in the region. Furthermore, the establishment of an agricultural exports center and a honey market in Hadramout was also discussed, reflecting a commitment to diversifying agricultural outputs and improving market access for local producers.

The collaboration between the Yemeni Ministry of Agriculture and the UNDP underscores the importance of international support in addressing the challenges faced by Yemen’s agricultural and fisheries sectors. As the country continues to navigate complex socio-economic issues, such partnerships are crucial for fostering sustainable development and improving livelihoods.
