The Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq al-Sharjabi, engaged in a video conference on Wednesday with the executive management of the Dutch company MetaMeta to discuss enhancing cooperation in water resource management and environmental sectors. The meeting aimed to explore collaborative efforts in integrated water resources management, the development of information systems, and institutional capacity building.
During the discussions, ongoing projects were reviewed, including technical rehabilitation programs and hydrological studies in the Tuban Delta and Wadi Mawza. Minister al-Sharjabi highlighted the importance of these initiatives in addressing Yemen’s pressing water challenges.
Al-Sharjabi commended MetaMeta for its contributions to Yemen since 2004, emphasizing that improving the reliability of water data is crucial for informed decision-making and enhancing the effectiveness of development interventions. He underscored the necessity of completing an infrastructure damage assessment report, which is vital for creating a technical roadmap to support reconstruction efforts and attract funding.
The minister also pointed out that the water crisis in Taiz remains a top priority for the ministry. Plans are underway to prepare technical studies in collaboration with UNICEF to identify sustainable solutions. Additionally, there are intentions to expand wastewater treatment projects and improve sanitation services in various cities.
Representatives from MetaMeta and the Juba Group expressed their commitment to strengthening cooperation with the ministry. They pledged to support programs aimed at improving services, building capacities, and preparing financing plans to address the water and environmental challenges in Yemen.
