Bahrain and 19 Nations Unite to Enhance Navigation Security in the Strait of Hormuz

Bahrain has joined a coalition of 19 nations, including prominent countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Japan, in a unified effort to ensure safe navigation through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. This collective initiative was formalized in a joint statement that emphasizes the commitment of these nations to contribute to the security and stability of maritime passage in the region.

The statement highlights the countries’ readiness to engage in preparatory planning aimed at enhancing safety in the strait. In addition, it supports the International Energy Agency’s recent decision to authorize a coordinated release of strategic oil reserves, which is intended to stabilize energy markets amid rising tensions. The nations also expressed a commitment to collaborate with oil-producing countries to increase output as part of these stabilization efforts.

The coalition has condemned recent Iranian attacks on unarmed commercial vessels and strikes on civilian infrastructure, including oil and gas facilities. These actions have raised significant concerns regarding the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian forces, which is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. The nations have called for Iran to cease its aggressive actions, including threats, mining operations, and drone and missile attacks that disrupt commercial shipping.

In their statement, the countries reaffirmed that freedom of navigation is a fundamental principle of international law, as outlined in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. They warned that Iran’s actions pose a threat not only to regional stability but also to global peace and security, particularly affecting vulnerable populations reliant on stable energy supplies.

The coalition has urged an immediate halt to attacks on civilian infrastructure and pledged to support the most affected states through the United Nations and international financial institutions. The collective stance reflects a growing concern over the implications of escalating tensions in the region and the need for a coordinated international response to safeguard maritime security.
