On International Women’s Day, the European Union (EU) emphasized the crucial role of Yemeni women in the ongoing recovery and peace-building efforts in Yemen. The EU highlighted that women in Yemen are not only caretakers and community supporters but also vital contributors to the political and economic landscape of the country. Their resilience and leadership are essential for the nation’s recovery, and the EU is committed to empowering women as part of its broader engagement strategy.

Since 2015, the EU has provided nearly EUR 2 billion in support to Yemen, focusing on humanitarian, development, and political initiatives. The organization integrates gender equality into all its programs, ensuring that women benefit equally from various forms of assistance. This includes support for female teachers, entrepreneurs, and civil society leaders, as well as innovative approaches in creative industries that foster economic opportunities for women.

The recent appointment of three female ministers in the Yemeni government has been recognized as a positive step towards greater representation of women in leadership roles. The EU noted that such representation sends a powerful message to women across Yemen, validating their ambitions and contributions. However, the EU stressed that representation alone is insufficient; there must be genuine political commitment to ensure women’s full participation in decision-making processes at all levels.

The EU’s support extends to civil society organizations led by women in various regions of Yemen, which are actively promoting dialogue and supporting displaced families. The organization aims to continue backing female entrepreneurs, advocating for girls’ education, and supporting women mediators to foster inclusive governance. The EU reiterated that while it will remain a steadfast partner in these efforts, lasting change must originate from within Yemen, with political leaders and communities working together to dismantle barriers to women’s leadership.

As the EU continues its commitment to empowering women in Yemen, it underscores the belief that the nation’s peace and prosperity are intrinsically linked to the empowerment of women at all levels. The EU’s ongoing support aims to ensure that Yemeni women are at the forefront of the country’s recovery and development efforts.
