Venezuelan President Commits to Mining Reform During US Cabinet Member's Visit

In a significant development for Venezuela’s mining sector, interim President Delcy Rodriguez announced plans to submit a proposal for reforming the country’s mining laws. This announcement came during a meeting with United States Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum in Caracas, aimed at enhancing oil and mineral production in Venezuela. The meeting is part of a broader initiative by the Trump administration to strengthen economic ties between the two nations.

Burgum expressed optimism about the potential for collaboration, stating that the opportunities for synergy between Venezuela and the United States are “unlimited.” He was accompanied by representatives from nearly a dozen companies interested in accessing Venezuela’s rich oil and mineral resources. Burgum emphasized the eagerness of these companies to invest in Venezuela, highlighting the need to reduce bureaucratic obstacles to facilitate capital investment.

The backdrop of this meeting includes recent tensions following a military operation that resulted in the abduction of former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, which has been criticized as a violation of the country’s sovereignty. Despite these tensions, the Trump administration has sought to provide private enterprises with greater access to Venezuela’s natural resources, which have been largely nationalized in the past.

Critics of the U.S. approach argue that it may exploit Venezuela’s resources for American economic gain, raising concerns about violations of international law regarding sovereignty over natural wealth. Rodriguez’s administration has faced pressure from the Trump administration to align with U.S. interests, including a recent law reform aimed at expanding private investment in the state-controlled oil industry.

The U.S. diplomatic mission in Venezuela characterized Burgum’s visit as a “vital and historic step” in a plan to establish a legitimate mining sector and ensure safe supply chains for critical minerals. The informal mining sector in Venezuela has been plagued by poor conditions and lack of oversight, leading to dangerous situations, such as a recent mine collapse that resulted in multiple fatalities.
