In a recent video conference, Yemen’s Minister of Human Rights, Mashdal Omar, engaged with Jeannette Seppen, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Yemen, to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation on human rights issues. This meeting underscores the ongoing dialogue between Yemen and the Netherlands aimed at addressing critical human rights challenges in the region.
During the discussion, Minister Omar outlined the priorities of the Yemeni Ministry of Human Rights and the obstacles it faces in its operations. He emphasized the necessity of forming partnerships with friendly nations and civil society organizations to bolster the effectiveness of human rights initiatives in Yemen. The minister also addressed the government’s commitment to closing unofficial detention centers and improving the conditions for detainees, alongside efforts to address the issue of forcibly disappeared persons.
Omar reiterated the government’s dedication to the principle of “all for all” in the context of prisoner exchanges, highlighting the importance of these efforts in promoting human rights. He also mentioned the ministry’s active participation in the Human Rights Council meetings in Geneva, stressing the need for support for national mechanisms that respond to human rights concerns in Yemen.
Ambassador Seppen expressed the Netherlands’ commitment to supporting the Yemeni Ministry of Human Rights and indicated her country’s readiness to continue coordination efforts to enhance the protection of human rights in Yemen. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to improving human rights conditions in the country amidst ongoing challenges.
