Hans Grundberg, the United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen, has issued a warning regarding the potential for renewed violence in Yemen amid escalating regional tensions. Speaking on Wednesday, Grundberg highlighted that such developments could exacerbate the already critical humanitarian and political crisis facing the country, which has endured a decade of conflict and destruction.
In his remarks, Grundberg noted that he is actively engaged in consultations with both Yemeni and international stakeholders to mitigate the risk of external factors complicating the fragile situation in Yemen. He emphasized the precariousness of the current moment, stating that Yemen is ill-equipped to withstand another round of conflict. “Any misstep could derail ongoing efforts toward peace and national reconciliation,” he cautioned.
Despite the challenges, Grundberg expressed that there remains an opportunity to advance a comprehensive political process under the auspices of the United Nations. However, he warned that any further escalation or involvement in regional conflicts could undermine these diplomatic efforts.
The envoy reiterated the importance of focusing on resolving Yemen’s internal conflict and achieving a just peace that addresses the suffering of millions of Yemenis. He urged that regional rivalries should not be allowed to destabilize the country further, as the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate.
