The Minister of Local Administration, Eng. Badr Basalmah, engaged in a video conference on Tuesday with the Head and members of the European Union Mission to Yemen, led by Ambassador Patrick Simonnet. The discussion focused on the ministry’s strategic plans and key development projects that are being supported by the EU.
During the meeting, the participants reviewed various initiatives aimed at enhancing the capacities of local authorities. A significant project highlighted was the Strengthening Institutional and Economic Resilience in Yemen (SIERY), which is being implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) across several governorates.
Minister Basalmah outlined the ministry’s work plan for the current year, which emphasizes the importance of strengthening state institutions and regulating the relationship between the central government and local authorities. He also mentioned the preparation of a national strategy aimed at implementing decentralization to improve services and foster development.
Additionally, the minister announced plans for a national conference scheduled for early May, which will convene government officials and local authorities to discuss and enhance their collaborative relationship and the quality of services provided to citizens.
Ambassador Patrick Simonnet underscored the significance of adopting decentralization as a pathway to achieving stability and building peace in Yemen. He noted that strengthening security initiatives must begin at the local level.
The EU mission reiterated its commitment to supporting the Ministry of Local Administration and expressed readiness to enhance partnerships that contribute to the ongoing development efforts in the region.
