Deadly Drone Strike Targets Iraqi Intelligence HQ in Baghdad, Claims Officers Life

A drone strike targeting the headquarters of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service in Baghdad resulted in the death of one police officer. The incident occurred in the Mansour district at approximately 10 a.m. local time on Saturday, March 21, 2026. General Saad Maan, head of the Iraqi government’s security media unit, confirmed the attack in a brief statement.

According to a security official who spoke to AFP on the condition of anonymity, the drone specifically targeted a communications building that houses an Iraqi security agency collaborating with U.S. advisers on security matters. In a related incident, another drone, which was filming the operation, crashed into a private sports club frequented by the Iraqi elite and foreign diplomats.

This drone strike followed a series of attacks on U.S. military facilities in Iraq. Overnight, at least three drone attacks were reported at a U.S. diplomatic and logistics hub located at Baghdad International Airport, with one official noting that a fire broke out near the base after the third attack.

Iraq has found itself increasingly embroiled in regional tensions following the U.S.-Israel strikes against Iran that began on February 28. Since then, the country has experienced frequent attacks, primarily attributed to Iran-backed groups retaliating against U.S. interests in the region. A fighter from the Hashed al-Shaabi, a former paramilitary coalition, was killed in a separate attack on a military airfield in northern Iraq, which the group blamed on U.S. and Israeli forces.

The Pentagon recently acknowledged that combat helicopters had conducted strikes against pro-Iran armed groups in Iraq, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. As tensions continue to rise, the security situation in Iraq remains precarious, with ongoing threats to both local and foreign entities.
