In a recent meeting held in Aden, the Minister of Education, Dr. Adel al-Abbadi, engaged with UNICEF Representative in Yemen, Peter Hawkins, to explore avenues for enhancing their strategic partnership aimed at improving the education sector in the country. The discussions focused on developing mechanisms of cooperation that would bolster educational initiatives and ensure the stability of the educational process amidst ongoing challenges.
Minister al-Abbadi underscored the ministry’s dedication to maintaining educational stability, highlighting the importance of continuous support and collaboration with UNICEF. He commended the organization’s significant contributions, particularly its support for the confidential printing press over the past year, which played a crucial role in facilitating the examination process and addressing logistical hurdles.
During the meeting, the minister outlined the key features of the ministry’s ambitious sector plan, which is structured around five strategic priorities. These priorities include ensuring the continuity of education and expanding access, enhancing the quality of educational outcomes, improving infrastructure and the school environment, and strengthening institutional capacities within the education sector.
Hawkins shared insights from a cluster survey conducted by UNICEF, which assessed over 200 indicators related to the conditions of children and women in Yemen. This survey provided valuable data, including detailed indicators for each governorate and an analysis of multidimensional poverty affecting the sectors of education, health, and water.
The collaboration between the Ministry of Education and UNICEF is seen as vital for addressing the pressing educational needs in Yemen, particularly in light of the ongoing humanitarian challenges faced by the country. The outcomes of this partnership are expected to contribute significantly to the improvement of educational services and the overall well-being of children and families in the region.
