In recent statements, U.S. President Donald Trump has asserted that negotiations with Iran are ongoing, despite Tehran’s previous denials of such discussions. During a press conference at the White House, Trump claimed that Iran is eager to reach a deal, suggesting that the country is motivated by significant interests in oil and gas. His comments come amid a backdrop of continued military conflict, including Iranian attacks on Israel and strikes near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear facility.

Reports indicate that the U.S. has sent a 15-point plan to Iran aimed at ending the ongoing war. This plan, reportedly delivered by Pakistan, includes proposals to halt Iran’s nuclear program and reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which has been a focal point of tension during the conflict. However, Iran’s parliament speaker dismissed Trump’s claims as “fake news,” reflecting skepticism regarding the U.S. administration’s assertions.

Amid these developments, a poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos revealed that a majority of Americans disapprove of the military actions against Iran, with 61% expressing discontent. This disapproval may be influencing Trump’s approach, as he faces pressure to find a diplomatic resolution to a costly and unpopular conflict. Behind the scenes, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has acknowledged receiving messages from “friendly countries” regarding U.S. requests for negotiations.

Experts suggest that Iran is likely to seek an end to the conflict on its own terms, focusing on establishing deterrence to prevent future military actions against it. Additionally, discussions within Iran are reportedly considering economic strategies, such as charging fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, as a means to bolster its economy post-conflict.

Despite Trump’s diplomatic overtures, Israeli military officials have stated that their war strategy remains unchanged, emphasizing their commitment to neutralizing perceived existential threats. Concurrently, the U.S. appears to be preparing for a potential escalation, with reports indicating plans to deploy thousands of additional troops to the Middle East, raising concerns about the possibility of a prolonged conflict.
