Lieutenant General Mahmoud Salem al-Subaihi, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council in Yemen, recently met with Mohammed Nasri, the Head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Office in Yemen. The meeting took place in Aden and focused on various issues concerning refugees and host communities within the country.

During their discussions, al-Subaihi and Nasri addressed Yemen’s commitments made at the Global Refugee Forum. They explored strategies to implement these commitments through practical programs aimed at enhancing humanitarian responses and supporting stability and development efforts in Yemen. The conversation also highlighted the principles of the Global Compact on Refugees, emphasizing the importance of international responsibility-sharing to assist host countries.

The meeting included a review of the situation at the Kharaz refugee camp located in Lahj Governorate. Al-Subaihi and Nasri discussed the challenges faced by both refugees and the host community, as well as potential programs to improve basic services and foster stability in the region. Al-Subaihi underscored the necessity of strengthening partnerships with the UNHCR and other international organizations to effectively address humanitarian challenges and enhance living conditions for affected populations.

Furthermore, al-Subaihi called for a greater role from United Nations agencies in supporting Yemeni state institutions, building their capacities, and improving public services. He emphasized the need to transition from emergency humanitarian responses to sustainable development and recovery programs. The importance of maintaining a strong UN presence in Aden was also highlighted, as was the need for continued international support for Yemen amidst ongoing challenges.

In response, Nasri reaffirmed the UNHCR’s commitment to collaborating with the Yemeni government to support refugees and host communities. He emphasized the agency’s dedication to enhancing programs that improve living conditions in line with the principles of partnership and shared responsibility.
